Shimofusa Koku Kichi ( Jap. 下総航空基地 , such as "air base Shimofusa ", engl. JMSDF Shimofusa Air Base ) is a Japanese military airfield the sea Self-Defense Forces in Chiba Prefecture . The base extends over the municipal area of Kashiwa and Kamagaya and is located about 15 km east of Tokyo .
The airfield was put into operation in April 1945 by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Forces . After the Second World War , the place was the base of the American forces USAF . The base was completely returned to the government of Japan in June 1960.
Today, the airfield, the location of the Japanese Kawasaki Lockheed fleet with naval patrol airplanes type Lockheed P-3 . The Japanese military aviation school has been training pilots there since 1960. The JMSDF helicopter squadron for sea rescue has also been stationed there since 1993 .
The runway with the orientation 01/19 has a runway length of 2250 meters and is published in the Japanese AIP and in the AIS Japan under ICAO code RJTL. Scheduled air traffic does not take place in Shimofusa Kōkū Kichi.
