Werner Walsch (born February 15, 1930 in Freiheit , Czech Republic ; † January 13, 2011 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German math teacher who was a professor at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

Life

From 1948, Walsch studied mathematics and physics for a higher teaching degree at the University of Berlin with the state examination in 1952. He then went to the pedagogical faculty of the Humboldt University, where he received his doctorate in 1956 under Lilly Görke (on the concept of function and its teaching) . From 1956 he was an assistant at the Institute for Education in Halle, where he taught mathematics didactics from 1958 and as a lecturer from 1967. In 1966 he completed his habilitation in Halle (methodological problems in introducing students to the proof of mathematical statements) and became professor for mathematics didactics there in 1970.

He was one of the leading math didactics in the former GDR and was particularly concerned with linguistic and logical training in mathematics lessons, the use of calculators and computers in lessons and problem solving.

From 1962 to 1990 he was a member of the Scientific Council for Mathematical Methodology in the GDR and from 1986 to 1990 a member of the board of the Mathematical Society of the GDR. From 1989 to 1995 he was on the advisory board of the Zentralblatt for Didactics of Mathematics. In 2010 he became an honorary member of the Society for Didactics of Mathematics .
