Shinghart ruins

Shinghart , also Shenigart or Sean Ghairt , is a derelict town in the northeast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Shinghart was in the northeast of the island on the northwest shore of Loch Finlaggan about five kilometers west of Port Askaig and eleven kilometers northeast of Bowmore , the main town on the island. The closest localities were the settlements of Ballacharie , Ballymartin and Portnellan , each about 1.5 km away , of which only Ballymartin still exists today. Shinghart was connected to the island's road network via a path that branches off from today's A846 at Ballymartin , the course of which roughly corresponds to one of the main routes on the island at that time. At the census of 1841 there were 57 people living in Shinghart. Ten years later the population had already dropped to 37 people. Today only the foundations of various buildings remain in the Shinghart area. The buildings in the village were grouped into two sections of around twelve buildings each. As early as 1867, some of the houses were described as neglected, so that the village may have been abandoned at that time. It was finally uninhabited by the end of the century at the latest.

Surroundings

In a north-westerly direction are the remains of a round hut on a hill. The diameter of the interior was about ten meters. North-northwest of Shinghart you will find the foundations of two Shieling huts. These measured 7 m × 5 m or 6 m × 4.5 m. As in many areas in northeastern Islay, Shinghart has historically mined lead . Remnants of the mines can still be found in the landscape.
