Ballymartin , also Ballimartin , is a village in the northeast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Administratively it belongs to the Argyll and Bute Unitary Authority . Ballymartin is a few hundred meters north of the A846 , the island's main road, which connects the two port towns of Port Askaig and Port Ellen , and can be reached via a junction. Ballygrant is about two kilometers to the east and Bowmore , the main town on the island, nine kilometers to the southwest. The closest village is the small settlement of Keppols . In 1841 there were 22 inhabitants in Ballymartin. Ten years later the population had dropped to 14. Ballymartin is not listed separately in current census data. It only consists of an inhabited farm. As in other places in the northeast of the island, lead was once mined at Ballymartin . Traces of the mines can still be found in the landscape today.

Surroundings

A menhir may once have been located northeast of the village near Loch Finlaggan . The 2.4 m long stone with a base area of 1.5 mx 0.5 m has been lying flat on the ground since the first recording, so that it can no longer be determined whether it was actually a standing stone. The remains of a chapel can be found to the northwest. The interior measuring 6.5 mx 3.5 m was surrounded by a 1.2–1.5 m thick, unplastered wall. Today this is largely covered by earth and preserved up to a height of 90 cm.
