The Shionogi & Co. Limited ( Jap. 塩野義製薬 , Shionogi Kabushiki-gaisha ) is a Japanese pharmaceutical company . Its roots go back to 1878. Shionogi is particularly known as a manufacturer of antibiotics , in 1958 the sulfamethoxazole was discovered here.

The Indian company Ranbaxy Laboratories started as a distributor for Shionogi in 1937.
