Shmuel Bentsur

Shmuel Bentsur or Benzur (born July 15, 1906 in Cluj ; died April 29, 1973 ) was an Israeli diplomat .

Ben-Tsur was born in Cluj in what was then Hungary . He emigrated to Israel in 1934, and changed his Magyarized surname Péterfi (rock stone) to Ben-Tsur. In 1930 he married Sara Weinstein.

Bentsur was a Mapai delegate and traveled to Hungary for the first time in 1948 as a representative of the Israeli Trade Unions . From 1949 to 1951 he was Israel's consul in Hungary. He was head of the East European desk of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In 1956 he became "the first full diplomatic representative of Israel ... in Austria "; In 1958 he was replaced in this office by Yehezkiel Sahar . In the 1960s he was Israel's ambassador to Bern .

Bentsur spoke Hungarian and German , among other things , as did his wife, who also came from Transylvania .

Ben-Tsur's son also entered the diplomatic service; he was second secretary of the Israeli embassy in Budapest until 1967, then as advisor to Foreign Minister Eban and from 1974 as an employee of the Israeli diplomatic service in the United States.
