Shmuel Friedland (* 1944 in Tashkent , Uzbek SSR ) is an Israeli mathematician .

Friedland studied mathematics at the Israel Institute of Technology , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1967 and his doctorate in 1971 with Binjamin Schwarz . As a post-doctoral student he was at the Weizmann Institute , in 1973/74 at Stanford University and 1974/75 at the Institute for Advanced Study . He then taught at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem , where he received a full professorship in 1982. From 1985 he was a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago .

In addition to linear algebra (matrix theory), he also dealt with complex dynamics. He proved a set theoretical version of the Salmon conjecture.

In 1993 he was one of the first recipients of the Hans Schneider Prize in Linear Algebra.
