The United States Geological Survey mapped it based on its own measurements and with the help of aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1960 and 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1969 after Lieutenant Brian Hall Shoemaker (* 1937) of the US Navy, helicopter pilot of the VX flight squadron -6 at McMurdo Station in 1967.
