The Shopping Arkaden are a shopping center in the south of downtown Bocholt .

history

As a result of the construction of the CentrO in Oberhausen, there was fear in Bocholt that there would be an enormous decline in the number of day tourists who visited Bocholt's city center for shopping. To counteract this, the city of Bocholt decided to convert the inner city area south of the Bocholter Aa to a large extent. By the year 2000, two independently run centers were built, the covered shopping arcades and Neutorplatz as a continuation of Neustraße. The old Lichtburg, a rental high-rise as well as production and storage halls had to give way to the major projects. The only thing that has been preserved and embedded in the inner courtyard of the arcades is a chimney, which is a listed building. The Hertie department store (formerly Karstadt ) was integrated into Neutorplatz. The Hertie branch was closed on March 3, 2009. The building was demolished in 2017, and the new Stadtsparkasse Bocholt building is now being built, which should be ready in 2020. In addition, another department store with a sales area of 5000 m² is being built, into which Peek & Cloppenburg will move in as a tenant. P & C's rental space in the arcades will be vacated so that further shops can open in the arcades in the future.

Naming

The name Shopping Arkaden was created through various competitions among the Bocholt population. The logo also points to the neighboring Bocholter Aa river , as the river name is also retained in the lettering.

use

After 15 months of construction, the shopping center was opened in 2000. It has a retail area of just over 26,000 square meters, making it the largest shopping center in the Münsterland . Around 45 shops and some office space in the city of Bocholt can be found on two floors.

According to the operator, an average of 20,000 people visit the shopping arcades every day, including many visitors from the neighboring Netherlands .

Transport links

Since the center is located directly on Bocholter Stadtring, the traffic does not affect the small inner-city streets. The underground car park and the parking deck with around 850 parking spaces can be reached from Willy-Brandt-Ring. In front of the western entrance is Berliner Platz with a further 400 parking spaces. The city bus stops Shopping Arkaden and Neutorplatz are served by lines C4 and C5, and the Kinodrom stop by line 64 Bocholt-Wesel . The Bocholt railway station is situated about 600 meters from the Bocholt city ring.

Impact on the northern inner city

The major attractions of the northern inner city, the houses C&A and Peek & Cloppenburg , moved to the arcades. The former C&A complex was empty at first, then was temporarily used by a furniture discounter until the operator of the local Intersport branch bought the premises and moved in there. For many consumers, the northern city center has clearly lost its importance due to the shopping arcades. In the course of this, there were further relocations and shop closings in the northern city center, whereby the now high level of chain stores in the south is causing additional problems for retailers.
