The Si Nakharin Reservoir

The Si-Nakharin Dam ( Thai : เขื่อน ศรี น คริน ทร , also: Sri Nagarind Dam or Srinagarindra Dam ) is the largest dam in western Thailand . The dam is located in Si Sawat District ( Amphoe ) in Kanchanaburi Province .

The Si-Nakharin reservoir regulates seasonal fluctuations in discharge in order to guarantee a constant discharge of around 140 m³ / s in the Mae Nam Khwae Yai (Khwae Yai River) . In the dry season the water is used for irrigation. In addition, 1160 GWh (or 1185 GWh) of electricity for the greater Bangkok area are generated annually in a hydropower plant . The first pumped storage power plant in Thailand is also located here. The hydropower plant has a capacity of 720 MW, of which the pumped storage plant has a share of 360 MW. The usable storage space is 7,470 million m³, while the total storage space is 17,745 million m³.

The 1534 km² reservoir (Si Nakharin Lake) is located in the Chaloem Rattanakosin National Park.

The barrier structure of the dam is a dam made of loose stone material.

The construction of the dam forced 960 families to relocate to the east bank of the reservoir. They had to give up their fertile farmland by the river and were given rough wild land on the surrounding hills to replace them.

The Si-Nakharin Dam has been publicly criticized in Thailand for being built on the so-called "Sri Sawat Fault", a geological fault that has caused earthquakes in the past.
