Sibylle of Bavaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sibylle of Bavaria (born June 16, 1489 , † April 18, 1519 in Heidelberg ) from the House of Wittelsbach was a princess of Bavaria-Munich and was elector of the Palatinate from February 23, 1511 to April 18, 1519 .

Life

Sibylle was a daughter of Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich (1447–1508) from his marriage to Kunigunde (1465–1520), daughter of the Roman-German Emperor Friedrich III.

She married Prince Elector Ludwig V of the Palatinate (1478–1544) in Heidelberg on February 23, 1511 . Ludwig had already been engaged to Sibylle's older sister Sidonie , but she died barely 17 years old before the marriage. The marriage was the starting point for the relaxation of the relationship between the Palatinate and Bavaria, which was considerably strained after the Landshut War of Succession . But the relationship between the Palatinate and Emperor Maximilian , whose niece was Sibylle, improved and Ludwig moved closer to the Contrabund politically .

The electoral couple remained childless. Sibylle was buried in the Heidelberg Heiliggeistkirche . Sibylle's inheritance was temporarily claimed by her brother Ernst , which her brother Wilhelm and her widower refused and Ernst promised further higher spiritual dignity in return.
