Sidney Charles Bartholemew Gascoigne
Sidney Charles Bartholemew Gascoigne (born November 11, 1915 in Napier , New Zealand , † March 25, 2010 in Canberra ) was an Australian astronomer .
He received a Master of Science degree from Auckland University in 1937 , and a Doctor of Philosophy from Bristol University in 1941 . From 1964 to 1980 he was a professor at the Australian National University in Canberra , and since 1966 Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science . Among other things, he developed aspherical correctors for reflector telescopes , which expand their field of view , such as those used in the Irénée du Pont and Henrietta Swope telescopes at the Las Campanas observatory .
He was married to the artist Rosalie Gascoigne and had three children.
