from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried Ebel (born February 3, 1934 in Schmölln , Thuringia ; † July 29, 2019 ) was a German pharmacist and former professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Würzburg .

academic career

Ebel studied from 1956 at the Philipps University of Marburg . There he finished his pharmacy studies in 1959 - and his chemistry studies in 1961 . Three years later, he did his doctorate at the Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Food Chemistry with H. Böhme . Siegfried Ebel then prepared his habilitation in Marburg until 1968 . During this time he obtained his third degree with the main food chemist examination.

In 1969, the scientist stayed at the University of Marburg for his first professorship . Two years later, he was appointed head of the pharmaceutical chemistry department. In the early 1970s, Ebel dealt with computer control in analytical chemistry . His work in this area earned him international recognition. Ebel received orders from the industry for lubricant and crop protection analysis. In 1977 he set up the Institute for Drug Testing in Thailand and was also active in Asia in the following years, for example by visiting professorships in Indonesia .

In 1982 Ebel was appointed to succeed Carl Heinz Brieskorn at the University of Würzburg . His field of work includes, among other things, the analysis of medicinal substances and drugs as well as the automation of this analysis and the associated data processing. Furthermore, he devoted himself to the various analysis methods and their connections. In Würzburg, like in Marburg, Ebel was elected dean of his faculty.

Board membership

Siegfried Ebel's expertise is still in demand internationally. For example, he was a member of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission and there also chaired the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Expert Group. He also headed a group of experts of the same name at the German Pharmacopoeia Commission. Since 1998 Ebel was a member and deputy chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Institute for Drugs.
