Siegfried Koesler

Siegfried Koesler (born December 12, 1937 in Nagold ; † December 1, 2012 in Würzburg ) was a German church musician . From 1971 to 2002 he was the cathedral music director at Würzburg Kiliansdom .

Life

He studied musicology, choral conducting, art history, archeology and history in Aix-en-Provence, Freiburg and Tübingen.

From 1960 to 1970 he directed the "Rottweiler Münstersängerknaben" in Rottweil in the Black Forest. From January 1971 to 2002 he was the cathedral music director in Würzburg. He directed the cathedral choir (ladies and gentlemen), the Würzburger Domsingknaben and the cathedral orchestra. In 1971 he founded the "Mädchenkantorei am Würzburger Dom", which at that time was the first girls' choir in a German cathedral church .

In addition to organizing church services and various concerts in the cathedral, the choirs also performed regularly under his direction in other churches in Würzburg, in other cities throughout Germany and also on international concert tours. Various records, CDs, radio and television recordings complete the artistic work. Koesler has given concerts in many European countries, the USA and Australia.

Together with Bertold Hummel and Erwin Horn, he initiated the Würzburg Bruckner Festival in 1993 , which takes place every three years.

Koesler was honorary professor at the University of Music Würzburg for Gregorian chant, liturgy chant, liturgy and church music history.

Siegfried Koesler was president of the international choir association Pueri Cantores from 1984 to 1992 , which he has supported since 1961. Under his direction the International Choir Meeting of Pueri Cantores took place in Würzburg in 1970 with over 5000 singers from 14 countries.

In October 2002 he handed over his office to Martin Berger . He died on December 1, 2012 after a brief, serious illness in Würzburg.
