Siekholzer Schanze

The Siekholzer Schanze (or "Schanze in Siekholz") is 135 to 155 meters above sea level in the "Siekholz" forest, north of the Schieder district of the town of Schieder-Schwalenberg in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia . The complex, recorded as a ground monument, is still largely preserved today as a weak earth wall with a ditch in front.

The quadrangular, trapezoidal rampart encloses an area of around five hectares. In the western part of the facility there is a stream that was probably dammed into several ponds when the facility was built.

history

Siekholzer Schanze, site plan from 1916

The Siekholzer Schanze was first described in 1878 by Ludwig Hölzermann , who thought the facility was a Roman camp. An archaeological excavation in the complex was carried out in 1899 by Carl Schuchhardt . Schuchhardt saw a "curtis" (fortified farmyard) from the Carolingian era in the complex . A clear age determination could not be determined due to the excavation. The defensive character of the complex could not be proven either. Friedrich Hohenschwert , the former head of the Lippisches Landesmuseum , thinks it likely that the Siekholzer Schanze was a courtyard enclosure from the Middle Ages.
