The Bombastus-Werke AG is a public company based in the Saxon district town Freital in District Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge manufactures the drugs, naturopathic and foodstuffs and cosmetics. The company is best known for processing the sage plant .

history

The name is based on the doctor Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim (called Paracelsus).

The Bombastus-Werke was founded on April 1, 1904 by Emil Bergmann, Otto Braune and Max Däbritz as a limited partnership . The entry in the commercial register took place on April 23. The first company headquarters were in Burgwartstrasse in Potschappel . Cosmetic preparations for mouth, skin and hair care were first produced there. The mouthwash produced by the Bombastus factory received its first award in Bonn that same year . After rapid expansion, the company moved in 1906 to today's factory site in Zauckerode with the newly built "parent company" of the Bombastus works. At the same time, the switch to industrial production took place. The manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations began.

In the following years, the range of products offered grew steadily. In 1922, the Bombastus factory produced more than ten different cosmetic and nearly twenty pharmaceutical products. Around 1914, the cultivation of the sage began in fields near the factory buildings. The area under cultivation of sage was expanded to around 30 hectares , and Bombastus was now the only company in Europe to cultivate perennial sage.

During the First World War , Bombastus had to survive with the manufacture of detergent. During the inflation of the early 1920s, wage cuts of up to 50 percent were necessary to save production. After the end of the recession, the situation in the company improved again. After the Second World War there were again severe production and sales difficulties at the Bombastus works due to the lack of raw materials. A large part of the product range was canceled because bureaucratic obstacles made approval in the GDR and export to the FRG more difficult.

The export to the Federal Republic was taken over by some sales companies after 1948. In May 1972 the Bombastus-Werke were nationalized and initially connected to the VEB Pharmazeutisches Werk Halle , and later to the VEB Arzneimittelwerk Dresden . The number of products offered by the company increased again over the years. In 1989 the Bombastus works had 70 employees.

After the turnaround and reunification , the Bombastus-Werke was privatized as a GmbH on July 1, 1990. In the following decades, around 18 million euros were invested in the location. Since August 22, 2000, the Bombastus-Werke has been operating as a stock corporation. The 100th anniversary took place in 2004. Since then, an information center (2005) and a new tea drying hall (2006) have opened. From 2013 to 2015 a new hall was built, which can be used as a warehouse and, if required, also for production.

In 2003 the Bombastus-Werke achieved a turnover of around eight million euros, in the 2011 financial year it was around twelve million.
