Siemens SD-100 and Siemens SD-160 founded a family of light rail vehicles designed by Siemens Mobility in the USA for the North American market. The development is based on the sales success of the high-floor Siemens Duewag U2 city railway cars, from which the models inherited the abbreviation.

history

The success of the light rail concepts in Europe was received in the USA in the 1970s, and from 1972 onwards led to the conceptual definition of LRV light rail vehicles . The Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA), established at the time , then established commissions to promote local transport systems for the cities where the previous trams had disappeared .

Even before the USA, the first LRV system was installed in Edmonton (Canada) from 1978. This was followed by the light rail in Calgary and the light rail in San Diego in 1981. For the three cities mentioned, the U2 light rail cars were imported from Germany at that time, through the Buy America Act with local final assembly from 1983. Other cities later also procured new designs from other manufacturers from North America. In addition to San Diego in California as the largest customer, Sacramento RT Light Rail in California later procured a few dozen U2 cars in 1985/86.

The next milestone is the purchase of the railway works in Sacramento, California in 1992. The first series SD-100 was sold to San Diego from 1993 with over fifty railcars. The further development SD-160 was sold from 2001 to Calgary and Edmonton, which complemented their U2 fleet.

The Siemens SD-400 / S-460 models are variants of the SD-100 / SD-160, which are designed for operation with 750 V and IGBT power electronics. They are in operation in Pittsburgh , St. Louis, and Valencia, Venezuela.

Even after the low-floor Combino was marketed as the Siemens S70 , a high-floor vehicle was introduced as the Siemens S200 , which can often complement the U2 / SD light rail fleet of the 1980s. In the renaissance of the tram , from the 1990s onwards, new systems were built with low floors. San Diego, as one of the first and largest buyers of SD vehicles, is no longer purchasing high-floor S200, but is switching to low-floor operation with S70.

Light rail systems like in Edmonton, however, which use elevated platforms, are still buyers of the successor types of the SD family. The latest S200 also has practically identical car body dimensions. For both Calgary (Green Line) and Edmonton (Valley Line) there are plans to build new lines that have no connection to the previous light rail network and which will then be built on a low-floor level - the existing lines will remain for the foreseeable future.

SD-100

The dimensions of the SD-100 still correspond directly to the U2 light rail vehicles. You can distinguish this from the other SD trolleys on the basis of the folding doors that were later no longer used.

Operators are San Diego Trolley in San Diego (52 vehicles), UTA TRAX in Salt Lake City (23 vehicles), and Denver Light Rail in Denver (49 vehicles). All vehicles are still in daily operation.

SD-160

The further development SD-160 is a bit longer, but with 24.8 m it is still short enough to fall below the 75 m maximum of the German BOStrab in triple traction. Trains with six cars can be put together.

The operators are Denver Light Rail in Denver (76 vehicles), UTA TRAX in Salt Lake City (17 vehicles), Edmonton Light Rail Transit in Edmonton (77 vehicles) and C-Train in Calgary (72 vehicles). All vehicles are still in daily operation.

SD-160NG

The NG series adopts some of the innovations of the Siemens SD-460 including the IGBT power electronics.

The operator is C-Train in Calgary (38 vehicles).

S200

The S200 are the successors to the SD-160 and operate under 600 V DC. The largest and new customer here was San Francisco, who want to use it to replace the entire old stock of vehicles for Muni Metro. For this, the model was heavily modified and is listed at Siemens as type "S200 SF". While the car body for Calgary is 25.8 m long and the vehicles have a floor height of 98 cm, the cars for San Francisco are 22.9 m long with a floor height of 86 cm. The curve radius has reduced from 25 m to 13 m.

Operators are C-Train in Calgary (60 vehicles) and Muni Metro in San Francisco (175 vehicles, with an option for 85 more). The vehicles are still being delivered.
