Siemens SD-400 and Siemens SD-460 are light rail vehicles designed by Siemens Mobility for the North American market. The development is based on the sales success of the high-floor Siemens Duewag U2 city ​​railway cars, from which the models inherited the abbreviation.

history

The success of the light rail concepts in Europe was received in the United States in the 1970s, and from 1972 onwards led to the conceptual definition of LRV light rail vehicles . The Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA), established at the time , then established commissions to promote local transport systems for the cities where the previous trams had disappeared .

Even before the USA, the first LRV system was installed in Edmonton (Canada) from 1978. This was followed by the light rail in Calgary and the light rail in San Diego in 1981. For the three cities mentioned, the U2 light rail cars were imported from Germany at that time (through the Buy America Act with local final assembly from 1983). Subsequently, new designs from other manufacturers from North America were procured in other cities.

In contrast to the SD-100 / SD-160 , which run under 600 V overhead lines, the SD-400 / SD-460 are designed for 750 V overhead lines. By using IGBT power electronics, they achieve higher acceleration and have been approved for speeds of over 100 km / h.

The first SD-400 vehicles were delivered from the factories in Germany from 1985 (with final assembly in Pittsburgh). Siemens Mobility bought the railway works in Sacramento, California in 1992. The other vehicles and the variant SD-460 with alternating current were then manufactured there.
