Siemens SL45i, SL45, SL42

The Siemens SL45 is a premium class (SL) business cell phone from the former cell phone manufacturer Siemens Mobile , which came onto the market in 2001. It was the first cell phone in the world to have an exchangeable memory card ( Multimedia Card (MMC)) and an integrated MP3 player . A special feature of the included accessories were the headphones from Sennheiser , which could also be used as a hands-free device.

Furnishing

Siemens original accessories:

  • Reserve battery (Li-Ion, 540 or 1000 mAh)
  • Phone cases
  • Data cable
  • Multimedia card (16 or 32 MB)
  • Travel charger
  • Mobile hands-free set ( PTT )
  • Stereo headphones with PTT button
  • HomeStation (combined mobile and landline network)

Product history

Although the SL 45 was already well equipped and with the MP3 player it was a really useful novelty, it could not establish itself on the market. It was ahead of its time, as the MP3 player boom didn't start until a few years later. In addition, the display technology of the SL 45 was quickly outdated and polyphonic ring tones could not be used either. The SL 45 was quickly replaced by newer models. The high purchase price was also a hindrance.

The SL models 55 and 65 were turned into design devices and the MP3 player was forgotten. It was only when the boom was in full swing that the 75 series was offered with MP3 functions, but the end was already sealed with the transition to Benq.

Expandability

It is possible to provide the phone with additional functions using so-called flash patches. In most cases this requires firmware v56. The native functions of the device are massively expanded - it is possible to use call recorders, multi-SIM capabilities, "GPS" (via CellBroadcast), call images and "pseudo" polyphonic ring tones. For the Chinese market, the last popular firmware was the v55. Usually it is easy to port v55 patches to v56. Only MMCs with max. 1 GB can be used, whereby max. ~ 700 MB may be in the mp3 folder. Some 1 GB MMC and rsMMC cannot be used. Compatible 2 GB are not known, not even with firmware 56; however, there is a modified firmware 56.

The V_Klay patcher from ValeriVi is used as the flash program. This patcher can modify the flash memory via the bootloader of the mobile device. As a rule, jump points within the firmware are modified and redirected to unused areas in which the extended functions are saved. As of 2006, this type of modification of the SL45i has largely been discontinued as newer phone models flocked to the market.

The SL45 is based on the hardware platform of the x35 series (S35, M35, C35) and cannot be compared with the S45i, which was at least able to use GPRS.

Model similarities

Similar or successor models were the SL45i, SL42 and SL42i, which had largely the same hardware, but differed from each other in terms of software and equipment.

The SL42 model as well as the SL42i and SL45 can (largely) be upgraded to the version of the SL 45i by means of a firmware update. The last popular firmware version is firmware (version) 56, which should be officially released for this.
