Sigeberht (Wessex)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigeberht (also Sibert; Sibertus; Sigbertus; Sigbriht; Sigebriht; Sigebryht; Sigebyrht; Sygebryht etc .; † after 757 ) was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex from 756 to 757 .

Life

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle , Sigeberht came from the House of Wessex without further details being given. According to John of Worcester's Chronicon from the 12th century, his father is said to have been a certain Sigeric.

He succeeded the late Cuthred , who may have been his father, to the throne in 756 . Soon, however, complaints arose against his style of rule, so that Sigeberht was deposed from the West Saxon Witenagemot and resigned to rule over Hamtunscir ( Hampshire ); Cynewulf became the new King of Wessex . But even as Lord of Hampshire he encountered resistance. After he was charged with the murder of Ealdorman Cumbran, his last follower, he was evicted from the country by Cynewulf. He fled to the Weald on the border between the kingdoms of Kent and Sussex . There he was murdered after 757 by a swineherd who wanted to avenge Ealdorman Cumbran near Pryfetesflodan (Privett, Hampshire).

Sigeberht's brother Cyneheard attacked Cynewulf in 786 in order to come to power himself. Both fell in this fight.
