Essex in the early Anglo-Saxon period

Sigered (also Sigred, Sired or Sigredus ; * before 798, † around 827) was king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex from 798 to 825 .

Life

In 798 Sigered succeeded his father Sigeric I as king. He is known from some charters he signed as a witness. In 811, as rex (king) , he signed some documents from King Cenwulf of Mercia . From 812 he only recorded as a subregulus (sub-king), a reduction in rank that was apparently carried out under pressure from Mercia. Possibly he was identical with Sigered dux (about "Duke" Sigered), who notarized Cenwulf's charters from 814 onwards. Some historians see the identity as certain. In 825, Egbert von Wessex defeated Mercia at the Battle of Ellandun . Following this victory, Kent , Surrey , the Kingdom of Sussex and the Kingdom of Essex submitted to the rule of Wessex . Sigered was expelled and Essex was annexed to the Kingdom of Wessex as a sub-kingdom.

Sigered died around 827. According to some historians, Sigered and his successor Sigeric II are the same person.
