Bernd-Olaf Küppers

Bernd-Olaf Küppers (born June 10, 1944 in Bayreuth ) is a German physicist , philosopher and theoretical biologist . Küppers deals with basic research in the natural sciences and philosophy of science , especially in the area of ​​the question of the origin of life.

Life

Küppers first studied physics and astrophysics in Göttingen with Rudolf Kippenhahn , then biophysics with Manfred Eigen , and did his doctorate on this at the TU Braunschweig . 1971 followed a research stay at Columbia University with the molecular biologist Sol Spiegelman .

Then he worked for more than 20 years at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen .

From 1994 to 2009 Küppers was Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and from 2008 to 2012 founding director of the Frege Center for Structural Sciences at the University of Jena.

In 1999 he received an honorary doctorate from Nagoya University of Technology . Küppers is u. a. Member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 1999) and of the Academia Europaea (London) since 2004 . Küppers is also co-editor of the journal Philosophia naturalis .
