Sigisbert Liebert

Sigisbert I. Liebert OSB (born January 25, 1851 in Augsburg , † March 26, 1929 in Schäftlarn ) was the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Schäftlarn .

Life

Sigisbert Liebert made his profession on January 28, 1872 in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Stephan in Augsburg and was ordained a priest on April 7, 1874 . He was prior in Schäftlarn from 1904 to 1910. In 1910 he was appointed by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria as the first abbot of the Schäftlarn monastery, which was rebuilt as a Benedictine monastery by King Ludwig I in 1866 .

Abbot Sigisbert I. Liebert was considered a "high-ranking bibliophile" and significantly expanded the library in Schäftlarn Abbey. From 1915 to 1921 he was Abbot Praeses of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation .

After his death in 1929 Sigisbert II. Mitterer OSB was elected as his successor.
