Placidus Glogger

Placidus Glogger OSB (born August 12, 1874 in Augsburg ; † July 29, 1941 there ) was a German religious and abbot .

In 1893 Placidus Glogger entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Stephan in Augsburg and made his profession on October 21, 1894 . He first studied philosophy in the monastery , then theology and new languages ​​(English, French) in Munich . His ordination he received on 18 July 1897. 1901 doctorate he became Dr. phil. He then worked not only as a pastor and preacher, but also as a teacher at the grammar school near Sankt Stephan .

In 1915 he became abbot of his St. Stephan Abbey (elected on October 15, appointed on November 21) and thus also head of the Ottobeuren monastery (at that time a priory ). With the help of Placidus Glogger and Theodor von Cramer-Klett , the latter was rebuilt in 1918 as an independent abbey ; until 1920 Glogger was also Abbot of Ottobeuren. From 1924 to 1936 and again from 1939 to 1941 he was elected President of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation (in between and later again Sigisbert Mitterer held this office).

Glogger wrote a large number of religious writings, was a well-known speaker and staunch opponent of National Socialism .
