Sigismund Gelenius (Czech Zikmund Hrubý z Jelení ; German form Sigmund Gelen; * 1497 in Prague , † 1554 in Basel ) was a writer , philologist and one of the most important Bohemian scholars of the 16th century .

Life

The son of Řehoř Hrubý z Jelení studied in Prague and, on the advice of his father, in Italy from 1509 . After graduating, he traveled through Italy, Germany and France . After his return he was dissatisfied with the situation at the Czech university and went to Basel in 1523. He found a job as a lecturer in one of the most famous printing works in Froben at the time . For a while he worked with Erasmus from Rotterdam .

Works

The importance of his publications does not lie in his own work, but in comments on works that he edited as a lecturer and in his translations from Greek and Latin.
