Sigmund (bulges)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigmund is a mythical figure from the Nordic saga , in this case from the Edda . As the son of Wölsung , he is the grandson of Rerir , great-grandson of Sigi and Odin's great-great-grandson. With his twin sister Signy he fathered a son Sinfiötli , with whom he avenged the murder of his father Wölsung.

His brother-in-law Siggeir , King of Gautland and husband of the Signy, had insidiously killed Wölsung at a feast to which the entire Wölsungen family was invited and left Sigmund and his nine brothers tied up in the forest to die. Only Sigmund survived this attack because his sister Signy helped him, who already detested her husband, and even more so after the attack on her family. From then on Sigmund lived alone in the forest of Gautland, looked after by his sister. She approached her brother under a spell as a young Völva and seduced him, whereby she became pregnant with Sinfiötli. When he got older, she sent their son, who was also Sigmund's nephew, to his father in the forest. These two lived as outlaws , had some adventures, in the meantime also as werewolves , until they managed to avenge their father / grandfather Wölsung by killing the Siggeir. When Signy died shortly afterwards, father and son went back to their homeland in Hunaland.

Sigmund, now King of Hunaland, the land of his ancestors, took Borghild of Bralund as his wife and had two sons, Helgi and Hamund . He later disowned her because she had poisoned his firstborn, Sinfiötli.

Helgi and Hamund and their descendants died on various occasions, until only old Sigmund was left as the last of the wolves. He then married another young woman, Hjördis . He too fell a little later in battle, defeated by Odin's own hand, and his sword Gram , the gift of Odin, which he had received at his sister's wedding, broke on Gungnir's spear . Hjordis kept the broken blade carefully. She gave birth to a boy Sigurd , who was to become the greatest hero of the Wölsung family.
