Helgi (wölsungen)

Ernest Wallcousins : Helgi Hundingsbana is coming to Valhalla .

Helgi called the Hundingstöter (Helgi Hundingsbana), a mythological figure from the Nordic saga circle , was a son of Sigmund from his marriage to Borghild von Bralund. His brother from this connection was called Hamund .

With his twin sister Signy , his father had also had a son, Sinfiötli , earlier , so that he was his half-brother and at the same time his cousin . A powerful enemy of the Wölsungen family, sometimes also called Uelfinge (Wölflinge) because Sigmund and Sinfiötli had lived as werewolves for a time, was Hunding , the king of Hundland . He had many sons who were always on the army . The strife went so far that the families killed each other's friends.

Helgi went on a war trip and killed King Hunding, since then he has been called Hundingstöter (Hundingsbana).

He lay with his ships on the beach at Brunawagir , let his people herd cattle together and slaughter them. Sigrun , the reborn Valkyrie Swawa, daughter of King Högni, rode to the beach and asked what all the people here wanted, who they were and where they were from.

Helgi replied: I am a son of Uelfingen, come from the west across the sea and hunted bears in Bragalundr.

But Sigrun, as the Valkyrie, knew better, since she had just been on duty in the battle against Hunding and his sons.

Later she was betrothed by her father, against her will, which is why she asked Helgi for help, which he gladly granted. They fell in love and didn't care about Högni's opinion. Högnis and Sigrun's fiancé called for war, in which Sinfiötli also took part. Sigrun's father was killed in the battle and only his son, her brother Dag, survived and oathed allegiance to the Wolsungen.

Now Sigrun and Helgi could finally marry in peace and have sons. But Dag sought revenge, he sacrificed Odin for retribution for his father's death. Odin lent him his spear Gungnir . With it he pierced the unsuspecting Helgi, who died from it. Then Dag brought the news of the revenge to his sister.

Helgi was buried in a tumulus, but when he moved into Valhalla, Odin came and offered to share the rule with him. Odin was the ancestor of Helgi and related to Helgi through Sigi , Rerir , Wölsung and his father, which may explain this unusual offer.

In the evening Sigrun's maid went to the burial mound and saw that Helgi was riding around there. Although she thought she couldn't believe her eyes, she ran as fast as she could to Sigrun and told her that her husband was on the hill with a large entourage.
Sigrun went and spent another night with her husband, who had to leave the next morning. On this and the next evenings she waits in vain for him. Now she didn't live long either, because she was grief-stricken.

Allegedly they are said to have been reborn as Helgi Haddingia and Kara, at least that's what the Kara songs say.
