Sigmund Matuszewski

Sigmund Matuszewski (* 1888 ; † September 27, 1954 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German theater actor, opera singer (tenor) and theater director.

Life

Matuszewski was initially seen as an actor on stages in Elbing, Altenburg (Thuringia), Riga and Pforzheim. In 1912 he changed the subject and started studying singing. He received engagements as a lyric tenor at the Stadttheater Bielefeld , later at the theaters in Danzig and Halle (Saale). In 1923 he came to the Freiburg City Theater , which remained where he worked until his death.

There was a close connection to the composer Julius Weismann from Freiburg , in whose artistic rise Matuszewski played a decisive role. On June 21, 1925 he sang in the world premiere of Weismann's opera Leonce und Lena under the direction of Ewald Lindemann . In 1932 he was seen in the world premiere of the opera Caponsacchi by the Dutch composer Richard Hagemann .

From 1945 to 1947 he was director of the Freiburg City Theater and initiated its reconstruction after it had been destroyed in the war.
