Signe Hornborg: Signelinna in Pori (1892)

Signe Ida Katarina Hornborg (born November 8, 1862 in Turku , † December 6, 1916 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish architect. She was probably the first accredited architect in the world.

life and work

Hornborg attended the Helsinki University of Art and Design and the Helsinki University of Technology from the spring of 1887 and graduated as an architect in 1890 with a "special permit". She first worked for Lars Sonck's office . One of her important buildings was Signelinna (also known as Newanderin talo or Newander House) in Pori (1892). In 1897 she designed (only) the facade of the Sepänkatu apartment building in Helsinki, since in the “male” profession at the time it was not considered “right” for women to design entire houses.

Signe Hornborg died in Helsinki at the beginning of December 1916 at the age of 54 during the First World War .
