Silazanes are chemical compounds with the formula R 3 Si− [NH − SiR 2 ] n −NH − SiR 3 (also with n = 0), where R can be hydrogen atoms , in the broader sense also alkyl groups or the like. Derivatives of this compound are also carried under this name. The nitrogen - silicon chains can be straight or branched. Thus they form the nitrogen analogue of the siloxanes .

An ammonolysis of corresponding chlorosilanes can be carried out for the preparation . The majority of silazanes are sensitive to moisture.

A silazane frequently used for surface modification is HMDS .
