The Anklam silver hoard , also known as the Anklam silver treasure , is a reading find recovered in 2010 that largely consists of hacked silver . It was discovered in the vicinity of the archaeological investigations for the route of the Baltic Sea Pipeline Connection Line (OPAL) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The finds include 82 early medieval coins (five have been preserved in full) and coin fragments as well as a massive silver armring made in the Volga region .

In 2008, near Butzow near Anklam in what was then the Eastern Pomerania district, a Bronze Age and Slavic Age settlement area was excavated . During prospecting in the vicinity of the excavation, a coin and ten coin fragments were found and interpreted as evidence of a hacked silver depot . Another coin was found in 2009. A systematic search in 2010 found further coins and coin fragments as well as four bar fragments and a not quite complete arm ring of the Perm type.

The finds were scattered over an area of 20 m by 30 m. By measuring the individual finds, a concentration could be determined, in the center of which the soil sherd of an early Slavic clay pot was found. This made it possible to determine the original location of the completely plowed-up hacked silver depot on the edge of the Slavic settlement.

Although the pieces of silver were only a few centimeters deep in the humus layer of a field, they are very well preserved. The 82 coins and coin fragments with a total mass of 200 grams are Persian and Arabic coins from the 7th to 9th centuries. The oldest coins were minted during the reign of the Sassanid great king Chosrau II (ruled from 590 to 628). The coins were probably brought to the region by trading Vikings . These maintained a trading center near Menzlin , in the area of today's area natural monument Altes Lager .

The finds are to be seen at future exhibitions in the State Archaeological Museum.
