Silva Island ( English ; Spanish Islote Silva ) is a small island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located east of Canales Island in Montecinos Cove , a side bay of Discovery Bay on Greenwich Island .
Scientists from the 2nd Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1947–1948) carried out measurements and named the bay. It is named after Major Raúl Silva Maturana, head of the delegation of the Chilean army on board the Angamos for the 1st Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1946–1947). The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated this designation into English in 2005.
