Silvano Fontolan

Silvano Fontolan (born February 24, 1955 in Garbagnate Milanese ) is a former Italian football player .

The defender began his career with the second division Como Calcio . With the club he rose to Serie A in 1974 . But the class could not be held. In 1978 he rose again with Como, but Fontolan moved to Inter Milan . With Inter he reached the quarter-finals of the 1978/79 European Cup Winners' Cup . After a year he returned to Como, which was in the meantime again second class. The promotion to Serie A succeeded in the first year, for Fontolan it was the third with Como. After two years the club had to relegate, Fontolan stayed one more season and then moved to Hellas Verona .

With Verona he took part in the UEFA Cup 1983/84 , but where they lost in the second round due to the away goals rule against Sturm Graz . In the Coppa Italia 1983/84 Verona reached the finals, but AS Roma won them. A year later, the 1985 Italian Championship was the greatest success in the club's history. In the 1985/86 European Cup , however, the second round ended when Verona lost to defending champion Juventus Turin in an intra-Italian duel . In 1987 Verona finished fourth in Serie A and qualified for the 1987/88 UEFA Cup . There the club reached the quarter-finals, where it was eliminated by Werder Bremen . In the first leg, Fontolan tested positive for the stimulants cropropamide and crothetamide. He was banned from UEFA for one year and was the first official doping case in European Cup history. He was then under contract with Ascoli for another year before ending his career.
