Silvestro Di Palma (born March 15, 1754 in Barano d'Ischia , † August 8, 1834 in Naples ) was an Italian opera composer and a representative of the so-called Neapolitan School .

Life

Silvestro Palma came to Naples at the age of 16, supported by the daughter of Prince di Sansevero , to the Conservatorio di Santa Maria Loreto. There Saverio Valente (vocals) and Fedele Fenaroli (harmony and counterpoint) were among his teachers. His first opera La finta matta was performed in 1789 at the Teatro de'Fiorentini. On behalf of his patroness, the experienced Giovanni Paisiello helped him compose the opera Le vane gelosie , which premiered in 1790. In 1792 Palma traveled to Venice with Paisiello, where two more of his operas were performed. From Venice he traveled via Florence, Bologna and Milan to Rome, where some new operas were performed. He was most successful in 1795 with the opera La pietra simpatica performed at the Teatro de'Fiorentini in Naples , for which his friend Giovanni Battista Lorenzi wrote the libretto. Further operas followed until 1814, after which Palma had to withdraw from opera for health reasons.
