Silvia Schroer

Silvia Schroer (born December 29, 1958 in Münster / Westf.) Is a Catholic theologian and professor of the Old Testament and the Biblical Environment at the Theological Faculty of the University of Bern . She has written numerous specialist publications on topics relating to the history of religion and iconography of Palestine / Israel and its neighboring cultures, as well as feminist exegesis and hermeneutics . Schroer is also the founder and editor of the internet journal for feminist exegesis in Europe “lectio difficilior”.

Life

Silvia Schroer studied Catholic theology and classical philology in Münster , Munich and Freiburg / CH . After completing her licentiate in theology, she did her doctorate in 1986 with Othmar Keel in Freiburg / CH on Old Testament references to pictorial representations in ancient Israel (title: In Israel there were pictures ; see list of publications). In 1989, the Old Testament scholar was the first woman to complete her habilitation at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Freiburg / CH. From 1987 to 1992 Silvia Schroer was managing director of the Swiss Catholic Biblical Works. From 1994 to 2004 she was President of the Circle of Catholic Exegetes in Switzerland. After further research and teaching assignments at various faculties in German-speaking countries, Silvia Schroer received the chair for "Old Testament and Biblical Environment" at the Protestant Theological (today: Theological) Faculty of the University of Bern in 1997. From 2010 to 2012 she was dean of the faculty. Silvia Schroer has been Vice Rector of the University of Bern in the Vice Rectorate for Quality since 2017.

Projects

  • lectio difficilior : Silvia Schroer is the founder and editor of “lectio difficilior”, the first internet journal for feminist exegesis, hermeneutics and related research areas (classical philology, archeology, Egyptology, Near Eastern sciences, ancient history, art history, social sciences, psychology, etc.) in Europe . The journal publishes specialist articles in three languages ​​(German, English or French), is non-denominational and offers primarily, but not exclusively, European scientists the opportunity to publish their work.
  • IPIAO (Iconography of Palestine / Israel and the Ancient Orient ): Silvia Schroer is the author of this compendium on the religious history of Palestine / Israel based on iconographic finds. The compendium is laid out in four volumes and covers the period from the 12th millennium BC. Until the Persian period. It consistently combines images from Palestine / Israel, which are often fragmentary and of poor quality, with more complete images of the large neighboring cultures (Syria, Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Egypt) and used them to reconstruct the underlying religious symbol system.
  • BIPOW (The Imagery of Palestine / Israel between East and West) is an SNSF research project (2015–2018) which, as a continuation of IPIAO, extends research into the history of religion and iconography into the Persian and Hellenistic times.
  • Gender and death: Silvia Schroer is co-initiator of the project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which explores the interlinking of the topics "death" and "gender" from four different theological perspectives.
