Silvius alpinus is a species in the family of brakes (Tabanidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 10.5 to 13.5 millimeters. They are colored solid yellow. The compound eyes are green in the males. The eyes of the females meet at the front, are large faceted at the top and are red-brown on the top, but dark in the lower quarter. The head, the mesonotum and the scutellum are hairy yellow. The abdomen has black hair on the sides. The wings of the males are yellowish at the base, in the females the veins R1 and R3 and the edge of the anal cell are red-yellow, the other veins are dark.

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in Central and Southern Europe . They can be found on the flowers of aster flowers from July to August .
