Simão Luis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simão Luis (* in Larantuka ; † 1665 ) was a Portuguese colonial officer. He belonged to the Topasse , the Catholic mestizo population of the region.

In 1652 Luis became the captain ( Capitão ) of Solor and Timor , the commander-in-chief of the Portuguese in the region. Under his command, the Dominicans founded Lifau in 1656 as a safeguard against the Dutch who were now pushing into the region. It became the most important base of the Portuguese on Timor.

In 1665 Luis was made the first captain general ( Capitão-mor ), but Luis died before his official inauguration. He was followed by António da Hornay , a captain of the Topasse, with which the title holder was practically equated with the ruler and commander-in-chief of the Topasse.
