Simon Bauer (born April 21, 1851 in Pest , Austrian Empire ; died July 18, 1897 in Lőcse , Austria-Hungary ) was a Hungarian philologist.

Life

Simon Bauer was a son of Ábrahám Bauer and Netti Fischer. He attended grammar school in Pest and studied German at the University of Vienna, in Berlin, Strasbourg and Paris. In 1874 he passed the teacher's exam in Pest and became a high school teacher in Szeged . Bauer joined the Freemasons . In 1890 he was transferred to the grammar school in Lőcse .

Bauer wrote for various magazines. He translated several dramas by Goethe , Schiller and Molière into Hungarian as well as philosophical writings by Leibniz and was a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . Bauer was married to Eugénia Lévy, among their children the writer Béla Balázs (1884–1949), the writer Hilda Bauer (1887–1965) and the biologist Ervin Bauer (1890–1938) stood out.
