Simon Brown (born August 15, 1963 in Clarendon ) is a former Jamaican professional boxer. He was IBF and WBC welterweight champion as well as WBC light middleweight champion.

Boxing career

After 65 amateur fights with 63 victories, he switched to the professional camp in 1982. Up to his first World Cup chance, he played 25 fights, mostly in the USA, of which he won 24. He lost to Marlon Starling in 1985 just on points. In April 1988 he won the vacant IBF welterweight title against Tyrone Trice in France . He defended the title for the first time in July 1988 in Jamaica against ex-WBC world champion Jorge Vaca; He had this on the ground six times and won in the third round. In October 1988, he defended his title in Switzerland against the undefeated European champion Mauro Martelli. Brown won unanimously on points. In February 1989 he defeated Jorge Maysonet in Hungary's third title defense early in the third round.

This was followed by title defenses in the USA against Alphonso Long, Bobby Young, Luis Santana and in a rematch against Tyrone Trice. In March 1991 he also won the WBC World Championship with an early win against Maurice Blocker . After losing the IBF title, he lost the WBC belt in November 1991 by losing points to Buddy McGirt .

In December 1993, he surprisingly defeated Terry Norris by knockout in the fourth round and was thereby WBC world light middleweight champion. The fight was voted "Surprise of the Year" by Ring Magazine . In January 1994 he made his first title defense, defeating the Australian Troy Waters on points. In May 1994 he boxed again in a rematch against Terry Norris and this time lost the title by losing points.

In his following ten fights he came to three World Cup chances, but lost these encounters each to Vincent Pettway , Lonnie Bradley and Bernard Hopkins . He fought his last fight in January 2000.
