Vincent Pettway (* 9. November 1965 in Baltimore , Maryland . USA ) is a retired American boxer in the light middleweight and world champion of the IBF .

Career

Vincent Pettway started his professional boxing career in 1984 with a victory over Ali Saad Muhammad . He was nicknamed "The Ambassador" and won the USBA Junior Middleweight title of the USBA from Gilbert Baptist on February 19, 1992 . In 1994 he competed against Gianfranco Rosi for the IBF world title . At first he fought a draw. In a rematch on September 17, 1994, he won the title. He defended him against Simon Brown in 1995 . He lost him on August 12, 1995 against Paul Valden after a technical knockout .

In 1996 he faced Terry Norris for the WBC and IBF titles, but lost in the eighth round after technical knockout. Until 2001, Pettway fought on, but did not compete for a title. His record was 43 wins, seven losses and one draw. Of these he had won 32 fights by knockout.

He became a coach and took over his old training facility on North Bond Street in Baltimore from Mack Lewis . In 2010 he became president of the Mack Lewis Foundation, which offers a literature program for students ages 6 to 13.

Honors

In 2006 he was inducted into the Maryland Boxing Hall of Fame and in 2014 he was awarded the School of Hard Knocks by Murray Smith for his service to the city of Baltimore.
