Then Kirke, Paul Kossoff, Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser formed the band Free . Their biggest hit was "All Right Now", for which Paul Rodgers was recognized in 2000 because the song was heard over 2 million times on the radio.

After Free broke up in 1973, Kirke and Paul Rodgers formed Bad Company. There were also guitarist Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople and bassist Boz Burrell from King Crimson .

After the end of Bad Company in 1982, Kirke was involved in the less successful band "Wildlife". When Bad Company got back together in 1986, Kirke was there. In 2009 he toured again with Bad Company. Another project was his New York rock band "Zeta Vang". He has been on three tours with Ringo Starr's "All Star Band" and has worked with Wilson Pickett , Bo Diddley , Ray Charles , Jerry Lee Lewis , Keith Richards , Ronnie Wood and Eric Clapton .
