Fire and Water is the third studio album by the British blues rock band Free . It was released on Island Records in 1970 .
background
In the summer of 1969, the free opening act for Blind Faith were on their US tour, the last concert of which took place in Madison Square Garden. The band was then able to perform for a week at the Ungano Club in New York. After returning to England in the spring of 1970, the sound recordings took place in Trident Studios in London and the mixing was done in Island Sound Studios. Fire and Water brought the band the commercial breakthrough and contains one of the most famous rock hits with All Right Now . Due to the success of the album, Free was able to perform in front of around 600,000 people at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival . In contrast to the classic blues of the debut album, the group here shows simple rock music that would later be referred to as classic rock .

reception
- Music journalist Robert Christgau wrote that the band had changed from saturated blues to unpretentious rock within three albums. The climax would be the bone-breaking All Right Now , followed by Mr. Big (namesake for the band Mr. Big ) and Fire and Water . The album got a B.
- At Allmusic , Matthew Greenwald wrote that if Fleetwood Mac , Humble Pie or Foghat had never existed, Free would be considered the greatest blues rock band of the post-Beatles era and Fire and Water would show why. From Kossoff's tasteful guitar playing to the soulful singing of Rodger, the band would be worth the coat that Cream , Blind Faith or Derek and the Dominos would have worn before. The album received four and a half stars out of five.
- Robert Davis wrote on sputnikmusic that the album was the defining moment in the group's career and that it would have made them instantly recognizable. On Fire and Water is precise songwriting and even more precise musical craft showed also the most famous song of the group is All Right Now included. The publication received four out of five points in the evaluation.
