Simon S. Lam

Simon Shin-Sing Lam (born July 31, 1947 in Macau ) is an American computer scientist who deals with secure protocols for computer networks.

Lam studied electrical engineering at Washington State University with a bachelor's degree in 1969 and from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a master's degree in 1970 and a doctorate in 1974. From 1971 to 1974 he was at the Network Measurement Center at ARPA at UCLA and from 1974 to 1977 at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center of IBM . In 1977 he became Assistant Professor , 1979 Associate Professor and 1985 Professor at the University of Texas at Austin . From 1992 to 1994 he headed the Faculty of Computer Science. From 2001 he holds the Regents Chair in Computer Science .

In 2007 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering . In 2004 he received the ACM Software System Award for developing the first Secure Socket Layer ( Secure Network Programming , SNP). In 2004 he received the W. Wallace McDowell Award from the IEEE Computer Society and the ACM SIGCOMM Award . He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM, 1998) and an IEEE Fellow (1985).
