Simon Roelof Slings

Simon Roelof Slings , formally SR Slings , informally Siem Slings (born March 13, 1945 in Beverwijk , † January 18, 2004 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch Graecist .

Slings studied classical languages ​​from 1962 to 1970 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam . Then he first became a teacher of ancient languages ​​at a school in Zaandam . From 1972 on he was universitair docent (later hoofddocent) at Vrije Universiteit. In 1981 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the platonic dialogue Kleitophon with Gerrit Jacob de Vries . This brought him into contact with the Plato expert Émile de Strycker . In 1989 he became bijzonder hoogleraar at the Vrije Amsterdam until he took the chair for Greek linguistics and literature in 1994. He completed two longer stays abroad: from 1984 to 1985 he was a junior fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC and from 1990 to 1991 Netherlands Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor . In 1997 he was accepted into the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen . Slings died of cancer on January 18, 2004.

Slings worked on a variety of areas, on archaic poetry , text transmission and text criticism (especially the Cologne Epodes of Archilochus ), Plato's dialogues (especially on the state ), literary papyrology and Greek linguistics. His Oxford edition of Plato's State, which he had worked on for 25 years, was published in March 2003.
