Simon Wanradt

Simon Wanradt (* around 1500 in Kleve ; †  1567 in Danzig ) was a German clergyman during the Reformation .

Simon Wanradt was active as a Reformation preacher from 1525 to 1529 in the Livonian town of Tartu (German Dorpat ). In 1530 he passed his master's degree in Wittenberg before returning to the Baltic States . From 1532 to 1536 Wanradt was pastor of the Nikolaikirche in Tallinn (Reval) . In 1536 he had to flee the Estonian capital because of a love affair . In 1542 he was a preacher in Paide (Weißenstein) , later in Viljandi (Fellin) , Limbaži (Lemsal) and in 1561 in Vilnius (Wilna) . From 1563 Wanradt was pastor in Danzig, where he died four years later.

Simon Wanradt is best known for the catechism, which he published in Low German and Estonian in 1535 together with Johann Koell . The eleven pages of the work that are still preserved today represent the oldest printed book fragment in Estonian.
