Simon Wolf
Simon Wolf (* 1836 in Hinzweiler ; † 1923 ) was a German -American lawyer , diplomat and member of several Washington organizations. Simon Wolf knew and advised various US presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Woodrow Wilson and was a friend of President Ulysses S. Grant .
Life
Simon Wolf was born in Hinzweiler. The family emigrated to the United States in 1848 and settled in Uhrichsville , Ohio . In 1861 he joined the Ohio State Bar , the Ohio State Bar Association . In 1862 he moved to Washington, where he lived mostly until his death.
Wolf was a member of the Washington Hebrew Congregation , the oldest Jewish community in Washington. He was an advisor to various presidents on Jewish affairs, including convincing President Ulysses S. Grant in 1876 to attend the opening of the Adas Israel Synagogue, built mainly by German emigrants, the oldest synagogue in Washington still in existence (the synagogue now houses the " Lillian & Albert Small Jewish Museum "). He also convinced President William McKinley to lay the foundation stone for the Washington Hebrew Congregation synagogue.
Simon Wolf was consul in Egypt in 1881 . He was appointed to the Washington Board of Charities, a group of citizens who screen charities and foundations for their trustworthiness. On the Board of Education he was jointly responsible for the administration of Washington’s public schools. He has intermittently worked in the District of Columbia examining and registering real estate files. He was a member of various German-American societies in Washington.
With his son-in-law Meyer Cohen, he ran the law and insurance firm Wolf & Cohen in Washington in the 1890s. A daughter of Simon Wolf is the painter Florence Wolf Gotthold.
In 1987 Esther L. Panitz published a biography on Simon Wolf with the title Private Conscience and Public Image .
