The Simplon road in Berlin-Friedrichshain runs from the Wühlischstraße / Simon-Dach-Strasse until Sunday - / New Bahnhofstrasse. It got its name on September 15, 1906, based on the Swiss Simplon Pass and the Simplon Tunnel that opened in the same year . Before that, it was a section of Kopernikusstrasse . In 1939 Simplonstrasse was expanded to include Ludwig-Lehmann-Strasse (between Lenbachstrasse and Neuer Bahnhofstrasse).

Buildings and facilities

The tenement house at Simplonstraße 6, built by Karl Burau in 1912, is a listed building . It was renovated in 2005.

Revelation Church
Row of houses 41–51

The Protestant Revelation Church, built in 1949 with house numbers 31 to 37, is also a listed building. It is the main church of the Boxhagen-Stralau community, which was created on November 29, 1998 by amalgamating several communities. The church has a parish hall and a parish apartment. The church, a wooden construction from a series production designed by Otto Bartning (1883 to 1959), was donated by the Swiss aid organization of the Evangelical Church as part of an emergency church program. Originally, the church had already before the First World War a ground lease for the construction of a church on the Wühlischplatz . However, there was no construction there. Instead, the property was exchanged for the building site on Simplonstrasse.

The church has a roof turret and a continuous row of windows between the roof and the masonry. The altar is located in the polygonal east arch. In 1960 the parish hall of the Revelation Church was enlarged.

A municipal children's home opened on November 2, 1929 at Simplonstrasse 15/16 . It was considered one of the most modern facilities of its kind and consisted of a toddler department, a day nursery and a day care center.

The house at Simplonstrasse 15 to 17 was offered by the Berlin Senate in the summer of 2002 as a replacement property for the residents of Rigaer Strasse 94. The occupied house Rigaer94 was currently facing an evacuation. However, after lengthy negotiations, the offer was rejected by the residents because they did not consider a house project with the previous tenants in the house to be possible.

The club and culture workshop Lovelite was originally built as a do-it-yourself club in a dilapidated house and moved to a former car workshop in Simplonstraße 38/40 in 2000. The club's activities focus on parties and concerts, occasionally there are readings, art exhibitions and the like. The club, which temporarily acted as the party headquarters of the mountain party , was closed in 2013 because the property was newly built. The Lovelite was reopened at the same location in 2016 in a newly created shop apartment.

The row of houses 41 to 51 belongs to the Helenenhof monument , which was partially badly damaged in the Second World War . The buildings in Simplonstrasse have been restored in a simplified manner and placed under monument protection.

Movies

The “Simplonstraße at the corner of Wühlischstraße” is explicitly mentioned as the setting in the film Die Drei von der Müllabfuhr - Baby auf Bord .
