The Simsonweg (formerly: Friedensallee ) is a path in the Great Tiergarten in Berlin . It leads from the Platz der Republik (formerly: Königsplatz ) to the Brandenburg Gate .

history

The Friedensallee was built in 1873 as part of the construction of the Siegesallee . It was intended to commemorate the victory in the Franco-Prussian War . The Friedensallee was supposed to connect the Victory Column, at that time still on the old stand in front of the Palais Raczyński (where the Reichstag building now stands), with the Brandenburg Gate, whose name was originally intended as Peace Gate .

In 1976 the avenue was withdrawn and the remaining footpath was renamed Simsonweg. In 2012, the memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe murdered under National Socialism was inaugurated on Simsonweg .
