Siroka Melniska ( Bulgarian Мелнишко вино ) is an old Bulgarian red wine variety .
Origin, distribution
The Siroka Melniska grape variety is one of the oldest varieties in Bulgaria. It grows only in the region Melnik and in the neighboring villages Charsowo ( Bulgarian Хърсово ) Kromidowo ( Bulgarian Кромидово ) Marikostinowo ( Bulgarian Марикостиново ) Winogradi ( Bulgarian Виногради ) Loseniza ( Bulgarian Лозеница ) and Chotowo ( Bulgarian Хотово ).
Melnik is also the name of the red branded wine that is grown in southwestern Bulgaria on the foothills of the Pirin Mountains in the vicinity of the town of Melnik . In a 2004 survey, a planted vineyard area of 4700 ha was registered. This makes the variety one of the most important red wine varieties in Bulgaria.

The late-ripening variety, the grape harvest, takes place in mid-October.
Typical of the Siroka Melniska grape variety are the small berries, the thin blue skin and the eponymous broad leaves, which reach a diameter of up to 23 cm.
Wine
The wines from this grape variety result in a body, alcohol and tannin, dark red wine . The wine is suitable for storage in oak barrels, it is suitable for storage for several years. It has a characteristic aroma, an aftertaste of Madeira wine and a high alcohol content.
Not to be confused with the Bulgarian Siroka Melniska (Melnik) is the Czech wine variety that is grown around the town of Mělník in the Central Bohemia region.
