The Sisu KB-112 is a three-axle truck introduced in 1962 by the Finnish vehicle manufacturer Suomen Autoteollisuus (SAT). The vehicle was equipped with a technically sophisticated tilting driver's cab . Its two-axle variant is the KB-117 , which was produced from 1964 to 1969. Only a few copies of both variants were made.

planning

Since it was assumed in the 1960s that international road transport to Central and Western Europe would increase significantly, the desire for a so-called forward control truck arose, with which good experiences had already been made in Great Britain. In other European countries, too, forward control vehicles from different manufacturers were introduced at the same time, which was not lost on SAT and its customers, as there was sufficient sleeping space and a larger load volume on the same floor space, which was specified by the respective national legislation could be achieved.

The previous overland route from Finland via the Swedish city of Haparanda to Central and Western Europe was quite long, as the direct route for sea transport across the Baltic Sea to Sweden was not yet sufficiently developed for truck transport, which necessitated long road transport has been.

Creating a cab was not a big step for SAT because the company had previously developed the KB-102 / KB-107 cab models for the Finnish state. As a small manufacturer, SAT wanted to meet customers' requests for a new, state-of-the-art forward control model. The main problem was to provide easy access to the engine for maintenance and repair work. Work started with a blank sheet of paper. The cabin was given a simple design and was furnished with a bed placed behind the seats. The service problem was solved with a tilting cabin. The development of cabin ergonomics, especially the driving position and instrument panel arrangement, was supported by interviews with more than one hundred truck drivers.

The KB-112 was the first European series truck with a hydraulically tiltable cab.

The first KB-112 truck was produced and registered in 1962 and handed over to W. Rosenlew & Co. Oy in January 1963 in a special ceremony where the press was present. The company SAT particularly emphasized the positive characteristics of the new forward control vehicle, while the negative aspects were not mentioned. Rosenlew representative Mr. A. Vaarne said that compared to a conventional cabin, compared to a bed, the new cabin type would allow a 3 m² larger loading area, within the limits of contemporary legislation. The truck transported wood from the sawmill in Seikku to Mäntyluoto harbor.

The two-axle KB-117, already with a more powerful engine, came onto the market in 1964. SAT no longer mentions the KB-112/117 models in their lists in 1969, however it is possible that some vehicles were made on special request. The new M series took the place of the KB models in 1970. There is no exact record of the total amount produced, but it is estimated that it was between 50 and 70 units, which means that the model was already a rarity at first.

Technical specifications

engine

The original engine was a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine of the Leyland 0.680 type with a displacement of 11.1 liters and an output of 165 hp (SAE). The models with this engine could be recognized by the model name extension SP . The two-axle vehicle came onto the market with a more powerful engine than the KB-117 BP; BP means the more powerful PowerPlus version of the same engine type, but with 210 HP. Later there was a turbo variant of the latter type and the engine code then became BPT.

transmission

The clutch works with compressed air. The gearbox is a non-synchronized six-speed gearbox from ZF . In addition, the driven rear axle is equipped with an integrated two-speed reduction gear. The KB-112 has a 6 × 2 drive and the KB-117 has a 4 × 2 drive. The tire size is 11.00-20 ". At least one KB-112, made for A. Ahlström, was fitted with the Sisu Nemo hydraulic trailer transmission system.

cabin

The sheet steel cabin, mounted above the engine, is hinged at the front end and can be hydraulically tilted forward in 20 seconds with a hand pump. There are seats for the driver and front passenger. The steering wheel can be adjusted forwards and backwards in a range of 7 cm. The full length of the 220 cm wide cabin is fitted with a 50 cm wide bed behind the seats. The cabin is connected to the chassis at three points. The instrumentation consists of an electrically operated speedometer and a tachometer.

properties

The total weight of the KB-112 is 17.5 tons and 30 tons with a fully loaded trailer. The curve radius is 8.4 meters and, according to SAT data, is two meters smaller than that of a comparable long-nosed truck. The total weight of the KB-117 is 12.5 tons.

Remaining vehicles

A KB-117 BP has been fully restored and in 2010 was the only known example of its type in the Finnish vehicle register.
